Wise words from Patti Smith

We should probably all start taking advice from Patti Smith on a daily basis. In this 6-minute clip, Smith discusses what it takes for aspiring artists and young people to live a life of integrity. Addressing a large audience outdoors, Smith shares her early experiences with poverty, her struggles as an artist, and the advice she once received from William Burroughs: “Build a good name. Keep your name clean. Donâ’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned about doing good work and protecting your work.” Knowing what you want in life, she says, and preparing for the grief is the key. “[Suffering] is part of the package…itâ’s all worth it. Believe me.”
