Tom Petty departs for the Great Wide Open

Tom Petty dies

On a day of already great sadness and loss in the world (if you are reading this anytime in the future, today 60 people were massacred by a gunman in Las Vegas), a music icon has left us too as Tom Petty departed for the Great Wide Open.

Into The Great Wide Open

After a day of conflicting reports suggesting that Tom really wasn’t going to Back Down, including a defiant missive from his daughter aimed at Rolling Stone Magazine, the Petty family finally released the news that we had all hoped wasn’t true. That a great man had suffered a massive heart attack at his Malibu home and died just a few hours later in hospital,

By now we’ve all now read the eulogies and put on our favourite of his albums. As usual. we have also seen all the outpourings on social media. However, this time it seems different. Somehow the grief over Tom Petty around social media today seems so much more honest than for a lot of other artists that have died. Over the last few years many artists have died and often it’s as if people feel obliged to wring their hands over it. Yet today this really seems different. People seem genuinely sad about it. Is it’s because he was one of those artists that you think you’re the only person who knows about him only to now discover everyone you know does too?

I don’t know. I just know that when I last saw him live, he was fantastic and raised a smile in an otherwise miserable mud bath of a day at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Lost Without You

When Bob Dylan breaks his usual stony silence, you know something is important. Dylan may have been hesitant to speak when he got the Nobel prize, but there was no delay in reacting to the death of his friend: “It’s shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”

Learning To Fly

Let’s also learn from it. We need to REALLY appreciate great artists while they are with us. Whoever there is still out there, show them your love now, don’t wait until they are an RIP hashtag. Look at all the comments on social media from people that wish they had seen Tom Petty live. Learn from that. Go and see your heroes while you have the chance.

In amongst the shock and sadness over Tom Petty’s passing, let’s also have your memories of the good times. The happiness that Tom brought to our lives. Please share your favourite Tom Petty stories, memories and thoughts.
