Star Wars May anniversaries

Time 100 George Lucas

If you are a Star Wars aficionado (and who isn’t), May must be an important month in your personal calendar. Mark this: George Lucas was born on May 14, 74 years ago. On this day, 19 years ago, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, hit the theatres.

And even if we missed today’s opportunity to ponder upon the great franchise, we would still find another chance in May. Most of the Star Wars movies were premiered in one May or another, actually. Is it related to George Lucas’s birthday? Unlikely, but it’s an interesting coincidence.

Anyway, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Any of you remember the year 1999 when this movie was released? It was nearly 20 years ago, maybe you weren’t even born (though I doubt it), but if you have more than 25 now, you might remember the huge excitement about the movie. Some people paid to see the trailer, imagine that! You couldn’t see everything on the internet back then.

No wonder people went crazy about the new movie after the original trilogy that they adored (weird as it sounded that Episode I was released 16 years after Episode VI). Pretty much everyone loved the trailer, so they were expecting something great! However, the movie itself was a different story. A number of people liked it, but many of them were entirely disappointed. Just like every single time with Star Wars fandom.

Well… it happens, more often that we would like it to happen. It wasn’t so bad after all. Or was it? Not that we didn’t want to find out about Master Obi’s youth as a Jedi Padawan.
