Happy B-day, Sam Jones (A.K.A. Flash Gordon)!

“Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!”

It’s more than enough if your name is Flash Gordon!

1980’s gave us quite a few cult films. Some of them are of dubious quality, but, nonetheless, they have gained cult status and cult following: “Escape from New York”, “They Live”, “Midnight Run”, “Big Trouble in Little China”, “Halloween”, to name just a few…

And among them is the super fun flick “Flash Gordon”, released in 1980. Flash Gordon is the hero of a space opera adventure comic book series created by Alex Raymond. The comic book follows the adventures of the titular hero, Flash Gordon, and his companions, Dale Arden and Dr Hans Zarkov, with Ming the Merciless, ruler of the planet Mongo, as the main antagonist.

But what about the film? It is, of course, based on the comic book series, but it made some changes to the story line, although those changes don’t affect recognition of a hero. What does affect it is the overall camp style of the film, very similar to the 1960’s TV series “Batman”.

So, why this article today? Samuel Gerald Jones (known as Sam J. Jones) had the main role in the film, and he was born on August 12, 63 years ago. This is still the role he is most famous for. Alongside him, “Flash Gordon” had very strong cast: Melody Anderson as Dale Arden, Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming the Merciless, Chaim Topol as Hans Zarkov, Ornella Muti as Princess Aura, Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin and Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan with the soundtrack composed and performed by the band “Queen”.

Upon release, “Flash Gordon” got mixed reviews. But, as we said before, it has a cult status nowadays, so it’s very well worth watching. And re-watching.
