Cherries Of The Runaways

The first all-female rock band was born 42 years ago in LA, California. They brought us two cherries. The first â€œcherry” was lead singer Cherrie Currie and the other would be their famous song â€œCherry Bomb”. “The Runaways” were founded by Joan Jett, a guitarist, and Sandy West who played the drums. Cherie Currie, a 15-year old girl was recruited later. Her voice abilities and pretty face would become the bandâ’s trademark. A year later, the band released their first album called – guess what – â€œRunaways”. After their second album â€œQueens of Noise” was released, the band quickly befriended some iconic punk groups such as â€œRamones” and â€œSex Pistols”. However, they experienced their first major success in Japan, in the summer of 1977. They had series of gigs around the country. The crowd went crazy. The least the girls had expected was such a mania. However, this otherwise successful year was to end in not so remarkable manner, as Cherrie left the group because of the conflict with Lita Ford, and continued with a solo career. These days Cherrie is exploring her many talents, proving to be a versatile artist – besides music, she also does chainsaw carving. She is also known for her memoir â€œNeon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story”. This book served as a basis for the 2010 movie â€œThe Runaways” with Kirsten Stuart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherrie. The movie explores the relationship between Joan and Cherrie, following Cherrieâ’s memoir loosely. In an interview published on “After Ellen” Cherrie didnâ’t deny the sexual background of their relationship, but made sure to underline that it wasnâ’t love. Also, in her memoirs Cherrie wrote about a gruesome â€œsex education class” which the band manager Kim Fowley held with a woman in the front of band members. This terrible experience wasnâ’t mentioned in the movie.
