2001: A Space Odyssey is undoubtedly one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time. Even if someone dared to say that it was the best one ever, we wouldn’t argue with that statement.

Exactly half a century ago, this film had its premiere. But even when the whole century passes, 2001: A Space Odyssey will be appreciated as something entirely (and eternally) modern, unique, profound.

It’s about the inception of human species (without mentioning the word, unlike a more recent film), about evolution and artificial intelligence, and that matter never gets obsolete.

2001: A Space Odyssey is unique in so many ways. Some Sci-Fi lovers were even disappointed: where’s the action? space battles? Why’s everything going so slow, taking ages for something to happen?

Well, this masterpiece is so much more than action. You have to be mature to sit through it without getting bored. Many people give it up even at the beginning. Seriously, they are waiting for something to happen. And waiting and waiting, for an unacceptably long time. The film is spiritual sibling of another contemplative Sci-Fi masterpiece, Tarkovsky’s Solaris, only much more ambitious in scope.

They give up before it comes to this:

When 2001: A Space Odyssey was seen for the first time 50 years ago, Rock Hudson said: “Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?”, and in York Times and Newsday you could read that it was confusing and boring. But you know what Arthur C Clark said? “”If you understand 2001 completely, we failed. We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered.”

So don’t worry, you are not dumb if you are not able to understand it completely. Just enjoy it and think about it. Not all questions need an answer.

And listen.
