2001: A Space Odyssey – half a century and counting

How do you make the greatest sci-fi film ever?

What’s the secret? How do you make something that still holds up, even if it was made almost 50 years ago?

The answer is – a lot of work, lot of talent, and, of course – cooperation. The film ” 2001: A Space Odyssey” had its United Kingdom premiere on May 15th, 1968, and it is special for one very important thing.

There is also a novel. Well, nothing strange, right? Wrong.

The film is not based on a novel, nor the other way around. Rather than that, Stanley Kubrick, the director, and Arthur C. Clarke, the writer, developed the film and the novel concurrently, with the novel being published after the release of the film.

Kubrick and Clarke were a match made in Heaven. They managed to produce a true masterpiece, work of art that transcends time and it will be, without a shred of doubt, a cult classic as long as human race exists. But what is the film all about?

Well, according to the critics and the audience, no one really knows for sure. Yes, there are themes that we all can understand, and they are there, in plain sight – nuclear war, space exploration, artificial intelligence (and what artificial intelligence that is), evolution… But then again, big black rock. And what’s the deal with that last scene? And the first one, for that matter?

In words of HAL-9000 – “Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop Dave? Stop, Dave.” Maybe we should just stop analysing.

“2001: A Space Odyssey” is something that should be experienced without tainting yourself with other people’s opinions. That’s the only right way.
